For drives currently in production, Danfoss publishes parts breakdowns and exploded views in the MyDanfoss portal. As of January 2025, that's the authoritative place to verify a part number. For legacy drives, the printed parts list in the original manual works, but check the revision date. Danfoss updates part numbers periodically, and older documentation often lists superseded numbers.

2. How can I tell if a Danfoss VFD part is genuine?

This question keeps me up at night, and not because it's hard to answer. Counterfeit IGBT modules, fans, and capacitors have shown up in packaging that looks dangerously close to the real thing. From the outside, the TR6 looks like a simple brass fitting. The reality is that the internal orifice and charge determine whether your system holds stable superheat or hunts and wastes energy. The Danfoss TR6 expansion valve is designed for medium-capacity refrigeration systems, and the two specification mistakes I see most often are the wrong orifice charge and the wrong connection type.

The orifice charge has to match your refrigerant and the evaporator temperature range. The MOP — maximum operating pressure — matters too, especially for liquid injection or capacity regulation applications. And the TR6 is available with flare or solder inlet connections; they aren't interchangeable. If I remember correctly, the type code stamped on the valve body encodes the orifice size, refrigerant designation, and connection type. Decode it against the official catalog before installation. Also check the valve's operating range against your design conditions — a valve with the right charge but an oversized orifice for your evaporator load will hunt at low loads. 5. What's the most common TR6 installation mistake on job sites?

Orientation. Installers assume a thermostatic expansion valve can be mounted in any position, but the TR6's diaphragm head has a preferred orientation — facing upward. Mounted horizontally or upside down, the internal mechanism can behave erratically. The symptoms show up later as superheat instability that's incredibly difficult to diagnose. If you're commissioning a system and the superheat reading jumps around even after adjustment, the first thing I'd check is the TEV orientation.

The second issue is heat damage during brazing. Without a wet cloth or heat sink on the valve body, the internal charge degrades. The valve tests fine immediately after installation and then fails within months. You'll see excessive superheat fluctuation and frosting patterns that don't match the system design.

Oh, and one more: the flow arrow on the TR6 body is stamped shallower than you'd expect. Confirm it matches your refrigerant flow direction before you braze the connection. A backwards expansion valve is much cheaper to fix before it's pressurized.

Deadlines, Pricing, and Documentation

6. Is rush delivery of Danfoss components worth the extra cost?

In March 2024, we paid $400 for rush delivery on a VLT drive replacement part. The alternative was missing a $15,000 building commissioning window. Was it worth it? Without hesitation, yes.

A rush fee doesn't just buy speed. It buys certainty. The vendor commits to a firm date, and the tracking reflects that commitment. Compare that to an estimated delivery window that might slip without warning. I've been burned by "should be there within two weeks" promises twice in my career. Both times, the cost of the delay exceeded ten times what premium shipping would have been.

Uncertainty is the hidden price in every estimate. When a deadline is hard, budget for guaranteed delivery. The cheap option with a fuzzy horizon is the expensive option in disguise. That's not a pitch for premium services — it's the same math I apply to every project we quote.

7. What documentation should I request before accepting Danfoss parts?

Most contractors ask for documentation only after something goes wrong. By then, it's too late. For any Danfoss component order over $1,800 — our internal threshold — we request a certificate of conformance, batch traceability, and the original packing list. I should add that some distributors call this a COC or a mill certificate. Same thing, different names.

These forms feel like bureaucracy until you're facing a premature failure. With batch traceability, you can determine whether a suspicious valve or drive component came from a specific manufacturing run. Without it, you're negotiating warranty coverage with no evidence.
