Danfoss Heat Tape: A Field Checklist Before You Sign Off

Quick note before the checklist: this is for anyone installing, specifying, or ordering Danfoss heat tape for pipe freeze protection or electric floor heating. If you're here because you need a Danfoss PVG 32 proportional valve instead, I'll get to that below. Those two products get mixed up more than you'd think, so it's worth sorting out before you buy the wrong part.

I've spent the last several years coordinating rush orders and emergency callbacks for heating components in commercial buildings. I've handled 200+ urgent jobs, including same-day turnarounds for property managers who didn't think they needed heat tape until the forecast hit 10°F. The failures that actually hurt almost always come from the same missed checks. This is the list I run through before I let a job go.

The checklist works for both pipe freeze protection and floor heating, but your specific system has its own manual. Mine is Danfoss's technical documentation. If you're using something else, the sequence still applies, but the values won't.

The 7-Point Checklist Before You Sign Off

  1. Match the exact part number to the environment, not the name 'heat tape'. Danfoss makes heating cables for water lines, floor heating, and roof/gutter de-icing. They are not interchangeable. I've seen a floor-heating cable buried under a driveway because someone saw 'heat tape' on the box. That's a callback and a finish problem. Write down the job's voltage, watt density, and maximum exposure temperature, then check the datasheet.
  2. Check cold leads, splices, and connection kits before the cable goes down. Most failures happen at the end seal or a splice, not along the heating element. If you're using a generic splice kit to save $15, stop. Use the Danfoss connection kit or the approved equivalent. It's tempting to cut cost on the part nobody sees. That $15 will cost you a weekend when it leaks.
  3. Confirm the control strategy. Heat tape without a thermostat or controller isn't saving money; it's an energy leak and a safety question. In January 2025, I got a 6 AM call from a property manager whose glycol system was running constantly because the installer left the controller in manual mode. Someone needed to read the manual—remotely, while two buildings were at risk. If the spec calls for a Danfoss ECtemp thermostat, use it.
  4. Measure resistance before you cover anything. Set your multimeter to ohms and compare the cold resistance value to the one printed on the cable label. Then do an insulation resistance test between the heating conductor and ground. It takes ten minutes. It's the easiest way to catch damage from pulling the cable too tight or cutting the jacket with a knife. Even if you're wearing a skull cap under your hard hat because the building heat isn't on yet, take the extra ten minutes. The failure you catch now is one you won't rip into later.
  5. Follow the wrap pattern in the installation guide. Some heat tape can spiral around a pipe, some has to run straight. Spacing matters, and so does the insulation you put over it. Don't improvise a pattern because it'll be fine. For metal pipes, the guide usually gives a minimum spacing to avoid trapping heat against a sharp edge. If you're unsure, look at the drawing.
  6. Don't bury the label. Photograph the model label, serial number, and the finished layout before insulation goes on. Write the part number and installation date on the outer jacket too. This sounds like office work, but it's the difference between a 15-minute service call and a 3-hour hunting trip. Last quarter alone, we processed 47 rush orders, and the ones with photos took about half the time to troubleshoot.
  7. Test the GFCI before you close everything up. With the circuit live, press the test button and confirm the GFCI trips. For floor heating applications, do this early enough to fix a wiring error before the tile crew arrives. This is the step people skip when the day gets long. It's also the step that prevents a callback after the floor is sealed.

What About the Danfoss PVG 32 Proportional Valve?

Let's clear up the other name. The Danfoss PVG 32 is a proportional valve—hydraulic, for controlling flow in mobile or industrial equipment. It is not a heating-cable component. I once saw a purchase order that listed Danfoss heat tape on one line and a PVG 32 on the next, and the procurement person asked if they were related. They aren't. The PVG 32 has its own manual, its own installation requirements, and usually needs a separate set of hydraulic hoses and connectors. If you're specifying both, keep the submittals separate and label each system clearly.

Common Mistakes I Still See

  • Double-layering heat tape on the same pipe to be safe. Only do this if the datasheet explicitly allows it. Two layers can overheat the cable and shorten its life.
  • Using standard pipe insulation that isn't rated for the heat tape's operating temperature. It softens, shows warning signs, then fails.
  • Wrapping insulation immediately after installation without checking the cold lead connection. A splice that would have taken five minutes to fix now takes an hour to find.
  • Treating the controller as optional. It is part of the system. If you leave it out, you'll explain it later.

Why Quality Shows Up in the Callback Report

People assume the expensive part of a heat tape job is the cable. In my experience, the expensive part is the callback. The cable is cheap compared with the cost of pulling up a finished floor or digging out a frozen supply line. That's where the quality perception issue gets real—the client doesn't remember the model number, they remember the brand on the label and whether it worked.

I have mixed feelings about brand names in parts. On one hand, a part is a part until it isn't. On the other, the name you install is the name your client associates with you. When I switched from budget heat tape to proper Danfoss components, our callback rate dropped noticeably. I don't have a peer-reviewed study to attach. I have job records and a client list that stopped calling at 2 AM. If you're a contractor, every component you put in is also a piece of your company's reputation. That doesn't mean always buy the most expensive option. It means don't save $40 on the one thing that keeps a school library from flooding.

One Last Boundary

This approach worked for us, but we're a mid-size commercial contractor with predictable maintenance schedules. If you're a homeowner doing one pipe in a crawlspace, your risk calculation is different. If you're dealing with local codes, different voltage standards, or a retrofit in an old building, the local code wins over anything in a blog post. I can only speak to the work I've done—commercial and light-industrial. The checklist will get you in the right ballpark. The manufacturer's manual gets you home.
