A mechanical freezer thermostat is matched by its cut-in and cut-out points, temperature differential, electrical rating, sensing tube length, and in some cases defrost switching behavior. The knob markings alone don't tell you those values.

In 2021, I tried a batch of universal replacement thermostats because they were cheaper and in stock. The first callback was a freezer that ran too long between off cycles because the switching differential did not match the original Danfoss freezer thermostat. If you use another reseller, ask direct questions: Are you an appointed distributor for Danfoss? Does your quote include the full model code and serial number? Will you support a warranty claim if the factory identifies the part as not genuine? Vague answers are still answers.

When the part arrives, inspect the label. If it looks re-printed, glued over another label, or does not match the box and paperwork, stop and call the seller. A legitimate supplier can explain the discrepancy. The small premium you pay for traceability is cheaper than a failed compressor with no warranty.

6. What should I record before installation to protect warranty?

Take sixty seconds before the part goes in. Photograph the label so the model and serial number are readable, note the installation date, and keep the invoice together with the photos in your work order file. Do this before the compressor is mounted or the thermostat is buried under insulation.

In 2022, this habit saved us on a compressor that failed within the warranty period. The distributor asked for the serial number and proof of purchase, and we had both because we photographed the label before installation. Another time, I skipped that step on a smaller part and the warranty query dragged on long enough that we just replaced the unit ourselves.

Also read the warranty terms before installation, not after a failure. Some terms require an authorized distributor invoice, a qualified installer, or specific operating conditions. Knowing that upfront is better than learning it while a customer's food is at risk. A file folder costs almost nothing; an unwarranted failed part costs a lot more.
