When I took over purchasing for our office in 2021, nobody warned me that half the job is decoding part numbers. The other half is admitting when you almost got them wrong.
Last heating season, our building needed a partial radiator replacement. The heating engineer handed me a list with two Danfoss codes on it: 013G8019 angle valve and 013G8013 RA2000 valve. They look like siblings. Search results treat them like rivals. In practice, they're not competing with each other at all — which is exactly why comparing them the right way matters.
I'm sharing this from an office buyer's seat, not an engineer's. If you're the person stuck with the spreadsheet, this comparison is for you. The frame I use for any similar purchase is simple: physical fit first, paperwork second, price third. Most people do it in reverse.
The part numbers are not trying to be interchangeable
Everything I read online suggested the real question was "which Danfoss RA2000 valve performs better?" That's the wrong question. What I mean is: they're made for different installation situations, and the code tells you which one you're holding.
The 013G8019 is the angle valve version — the body makes a right-angle turn so it can connect a radiator to pipework coming out of a wall or up through the floor. The 013G8013 is the RA2000 radiator valve in the style our engineer spec'd for the runs where the pipe approaches the valve more or less in line with the radiator connection.
Put another way: one is not an upgraded version of the other. They're two configurations within the same product family. If your pipe layout calls for the angle body and you order the standard RA2000 body, you'll find out at installation time, when the radiator won't reach the pipe. (Should mention: that conversation is usually loud.)
In Europe, thermostatic radiator valves are covered by EN 215, which sets baseline requirements for things like control accuracy and endurance. That's a useful quality floor. What EN 215 does not tell you is whether a valve body matches your pipe run.
Difference #1: the geometry you can actually see
The angle valve's inlet and outlet sit at roughly 90 degrees to each other. That makes it the usual choice where pipework comes up from the floor below a radiator, or exits the wall right behind the valve. It keeps the connection tight against the wall instead of forcing a loop of pipe into the room.
The 013G8013 RA2000 valve in our order was for radiator positions where the pipe was already running along the wall at the same height. No sharp turn needed. It's the more straightforward body pattern, and in our case it was also the one our regular distributor stocked.
That last point almost caused the mistake.
Difference #2: what your quote actually says
I sent a request for quotation to two suppliers. Supplier A came in about $90 lower. Their line items were casual — something like "Danfoss RA2000 angle valve, qty 6" and "Danfoss RA2000 valve, qty 6." No manufacturer codes on the lines. Supplier B was slightly higher, but each line matched the 013G8019 and 013G8013 part numbers from the engineer's list, and they flagged that the thermostatic elements were not included.
I almost went with Supplier A. The vendor who couldn't provide proper part-level invoicing has burned me before — finance rejected a $2,400 expense because the receipt didn't match the purchase order. So I asked Supplier A to re-issue with codes. They couldn't confirm whether 013G8019 was the angle body without "checking the warehouse." That answer cost them the order.
I should add that this was not about being precious. Our finance team requires part numbers because the engineer's spec is the audit trail. If the invoice says "RA2000 valve" and the project file says "013G8013," somebody has to explain the difference later. That explanation usually lands on me.
Difference #3: what a wrong code really costs
Here's the part that surprised me. The price gap between the two quotes mattered far less than the cost of ordering the wrong physical valve.
The conventional wisdom is that you compare quotes and pick the reliable low one. My experience with radiator parts specifically suggests something else: a $90 saving disappears the moment a contractor arrives and six valves don't fit. You're looking at a return, restocking fees, rush shipping on the correct parts, and a callback visit. In our case, that would have wiped out the saving several times over — and delayed heat in a building with 40 people in it.
The angle valve (013G8019) and the RA2000 valve (013G8013) may look similar in a catalog photo, but they are not field substitutes. The difference is not a matter of taste or brand preference. It's a matter of how the pipe is arranged, which is decided by the building, not by whichever part has better availability this week.
When to order 013G8019 vs 013G8013
Based on our project, here's the honest guidance I can give another non-engineer buyer:
- Order the 013G8019 angle valve when the pipe comes up through the floor or out of the wall at a right angle to the radiator connection. That's the geometry it's built for.
- Order the 013G8013 RA2000 valve when the engineer's spec calls for it on a straight run — typically where the pipe approaches the radiator in line with the connection.
But do not take my word as a substitute for a site check. If you're not sure, take a photo of the existing valve and the pipe route, then send it to the distributor's technical line. If you have a heating engineer, ask them to mark each valve location. That ten-minute conversation is cheaper than any restocking fee I've ever seen.
The checklist I use now for any Danfoss valve order
I keep this in the notes app on my phone, and it has saved me more than once:
- Every line on the purchase order carries the full manufacturer code, not just a description.
- The invoice matches those codes line for line.
- I know whether the thermostatic element and any fittings are included or sold separately.
- I've confirmed the body pattern — angle or straight — against the pipe layout for each location.
The last one is the one I'd have skipped five years ago. Now it's the first thing I check.
If you're comparing 013G8019 and 013G8013 because you think one is "better," you're comparing the wrong things. I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining the difference now than deal with mismatched expectations at installation. An informed buyer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. That's what this purchase taught me.
